Installation is where roofing success is decided. A well-made tile installed wrong will leak, warp, and fail faster than a mid-grade tile installed correctly. The pattern is consistent across job sites: the material gets blamed, but the root cause is usually in the fastening, the spacing, or the details at edges and transitions.
This guide covers the five installation errors that generate the most callbacks — and how to prevent each one before the crew leaves the site.
Over-tightening fasteners. Synthetic resin tiles expand and contract with temperature. When a screw is driven too hard, the washer deforms into a hard wedge, the tile can't move, and stress concentrates around the hole. In hot sun, this creates buckling. In cold, it creates radial cracks. The fix: use a torque-limited driver or train installers to tighten until the washer just seats — not crushes.
Undersized or un-drilled holes. Resin tile needs room to move. If the hole is drilled too small, the screw thread bites the tile body and prevents thermal expansion. The fix: pre-drill where required, and ensure the hole diameter allows the recommended clearance.
Wrong overlap length for the slope and climate. A 150mm overlap that works on a steep roof in a dry region may not be enough on a low-slope roof in monsoon country. Wind-driven rain finds small gaps and pushes through. The fix: adjust overlap length based on roof pitch and local rainfall intensity.
Mixing accessories from different systems. Ridge caps from one supplier, tiles from another — and the profiles don't seat tightly. Water enters at the transition. The fix: use a matched system where tiles, ridge caps, trims, and closures are designed to work together.
Ignoring purlin alignment and spacing. If purlins are uneven or spaced wider than the tile design spec, the roof surface won't be flat and fasteners won't hold consistently. The fix: check purlin alignment before laying the first tile.
Installation quality is not about skill level alone — it's about consistent process. When the crew follows the same sequence, uses the same accessories, and checks the same points on every project, the callback rate drops predictably.
